The Map Room was established during World War II on the ground floor of the White House. It was primarily a communications center. Security-classified military and diplomatic messages sent to the White House by the State, War, and Navy departments and by foreign governments were filed in the Map Room file. The Map Room was closed as a White House Office in May 1946.
